Following the glorious avant-premiere in Crete and just a couple of days prior to its official release in theatres, the official premiere of the much-anticipated film KAZANTZAKIS by Iannis Smaragdis took place last Monday, November 20th at Pallas theatre with tremendous success.
In a highly mystical atmosphere inside the packed theatre and following the continuous applause, KAZANTZAKIS captivated hearts and minds. After the screening a liberating and emotional silence was felt throughout, with viewers remaining in their seats, not wanting to emerge from the unique life journey of Nikos Kazantzakis.
The director, cast and crew with close friends by their side shared unique moments they experienced during filming. “…the film was made with a lot of love”, explained the director in a recent interview. Many remarked that this is perhaps the director’s best film yet.
Many were the political officials, artists and celebrities that turned out at the event and along with family and special guests, applauded Iannis Smaragdis’ new vision.
Government officials included: General Secretary of Digital Policy, Communication and Media Mr. Lefteris Kretsos, Alternate Director General of the Secretariat of Greeks Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Dimitris Plevrakis, parliament member and former minister Mr. Nikos Filis.
Also attending the premiere were former Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, who honored Iannis Smaragdis with his presence, the ND Vice President Mr. Kostas Hatzidakis, the former Minister of Tourism Mrs. Olga Kefalogianni, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Dora Bakoyiannis, the former Minister Mr. Nikos Christodoulakis and the former Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Mr. Giorgos Anomeritis. Also present were the former President of PASOK Mr. Evangelos Venizelos and Party Leader of POTAMI and friend to the director Mr. Stavros Theodorakis.
The fabulous event honoured with their presence the music composers Mimis Plessas and Giorgos Hatzinasios, actress Katia Dandoulaki, Sakis Rouvas and Katia Zigouli, Giannis Kiriakopoulos, sculptor Kostas Varotsos, painter Savvas Georgiadis, author Dimitris Nollas, director Lakis Papastathis, director and president of the Greek Directors Union and friend to the director, Haris Papadopoulos and many others. Vincent Michaud, the French co-producer was also among the guests.
Brilliantly portraying the main character of Nikos Kazantzakis is actor Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos, while the wonderful Marina Kalogirou portrays his partner, Eleni. Eight-year-old Alexandros Kambaxis is young Nikos Kazantzakis and Stefanos Lineos is the writer at a mature age.
A slew of renowned actors participate in the film. Argiris Ksafis portrays Kazantzakis’ father and Maria Skoula his mother. Actor Nikos Kardonis skillfully recreates the flamboyant poet Angelos Sikelianos and Amalia Arseni is his wife Eva, Itka is played by Youlika Skafida, Alexandros Kollatos is Jules Dassin, Zeta Douka is Melina Merkouri, Adrian Frieling is Dr Heilmayer, while Anthoula Katsimatides is “the good witch”. In a surprise appearance as Dr. Stekel is Nikos Marinakos. Other remarkable actors that took part in the film are Olga Damani, Ersi Malikenzou, Panos Skouroliakos, Takis Papamatthaiou, Michael Androulidakis in the role of El Greco, Loudovikos of Anogeia, Thodoris Atheridis is exceptional as Zorbas and of course, in the role of the abbot of Mount Sinai we see an “otherworldy” Stathis Psaltis.
The film’s main crew are: director and scriptwriter Iannis Smaragdis, producer Eleni Smaragdis, French co-producer Vincent Michaud, director of photography Ari Stavrou, music composer Minos Matsas, costume and set director George Patsas and editor Stella Filippopoulou.
Audio Visual S.A. is the film’s distributor in Greece and Cyprus. The firm had also distributed the great commercial and ARTISTIC success EL GRECO.
